Not many people in Indonesia talk about ianfu. The few that do are independent researchers, as Indonesians are not really concerned about survivors. This is the point that an author and independent researcher, Eka Hindra makes, on the issue of Ianfu in YouTube LetssTalk Feminist on Facebook #7. Eka says that the inspiration came in 1999 when she worked as a journalist at Radio Internews Indonesia. She worked at the Women Program, the first in Indonesia to have a feminist perspective, and not an infotainment women issue, but real journalism who conducted research on the field.

It is violence when it causes physical, psychological, sexual suffering and abandonment. How does violence happen? There is social cultural aspect involved in it. If somebody experiences violence, then it is considered a flaw, and therefore should be hidden, and not reported. Another example is when a child is about to get married, particularly girls, there is a message from parents, that the child should always keep whatever happens in her household to herself. It would be a disgrace if she tells others about it. So when violence happens, the victim does not dare to open up.

To start off the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 Celebration, Girl Up UNS (Universitas Sebelas Maret) moderator, Fatimi Hanum Sabila explains three cases of violence against women, of which two of them becomes viral on social media. The first case is that of a student of PPDS Universitas Diponegoro, while the second case is a tragic case of a fried food seller in West Sumatera, which does not become viral. The organizer distributes mentimeter to participants in order to gauge their ideas, and display the answers on the screen.

The City of Surakarta has made significant steps for education, by allocating 20% budget for education. Yet, the bulk of the budget goes to teachers’ salary and allowance, and physical construction of junior high school buildings. There are a number if breakthroughs that accompany such initiatives, and equally significant issues to address – i.e. recruitment of new junior high school students based on academic performance, which remains unresolved (on the basis of academic performance in city and district schools).
