On Wednesday 7/8, the Civil Society Coalition for Security Reform conducted a hearing with the National Human Rights Commissioner(s) on government revision of the Armed Forces and Police Laws. The Coalition presented its review and opinions regarding the discussion being held the President and the Parliament regarding the Armed Forces and Police Laws, which, in the Coalition’s view, infringed on the established procedure for law preparation, and on the principles of human rights and democracy.

The Police charged Meila for defamation re. Article 27 Point 3 in conjunction to Article 45 Point 3 of the Information and Electronic Transaction Law. The Coalition believed that the charge was an attempt to criminalse Meila and a serious attack on women human rights defenders and victim of sexual violence.

The National Human Rights Commission conducted a book review in collaboration with the interfaith program study, postgraduate school, University of Gadjahmada and Islamic and Democracy Study Centre (PUSA) Paramadia on Wednesday (19/6). In that opportunity, the Vice Chair of the National Human Rights Commission, Pramono Ubaid stated during a book launch of conflict management and religious freedom that the old constitution and amendments brought progress to religious freedom, but there remained issues in implementation. This was evident at the level of Constitutional Court decisions and in the regions. These issues were responsible for the regression in the freedom of religion and in democracy in Indonesia.

There were issues confronting the Civil Society Coalition for Women and Children (Komasipera) – a coalition established to respond to actual issues, cases and urgent calls in communities in order to meet the human rights of citizens. This was expressed by Vera Kartika Giantari during a Komasivera discussion on 18/7. In previous meetings, participants –activist of women and children issues – identified issues and expectations in communities.

Nia Dinata, an art practitioner, a film director, expresses view on draft law on broadcasting during a public discussion organised by Lesstalk_Sexualities on Saturday (15/6), and explains her roles from the perspective of film industry. As a producer, she not only works with fiction but also documentary films. Nia says that docuymentary work is factual not fictional, with most time spent on investigation. She appreciates the supports and the intersection from the press and documentation.
