Human Rights Festival as a Momentum for Increasing Awareness and Solidarity for Human Rights

The tenth human rights festival will proceed in Bitung City, North Sulawesi Sulawesi on 29–31 July 2024, featuring “Advance Democracy, Human Rights Fulfillment, and Strengthening Community Participation through State Accountability from Regional to National Levels.” Officially, INFID and the National Human Rights Commission initiated the Human Rights Festival in 2014.

This festival embodies commitments to promote and spread human rights at local/regional and national levels, and reflects the works that have been done by the National Human Rights Commission, and the Presidential Staff Office, International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID) and the Government of Bitung City.

Before the Festival in 2024, the National Human Rights Commission and INFID, KSP and the Government of Bitung City signed MoU or Joint Agreement to reaffirm their respective commitments and roles.
The scope of the agreement includes: (1) establishment of joint committee; (2) setting up framework for action; (3) meaningful participation of all community and members in all activities; (4) fundraising; (5) promotion and information dissemination about activities; and (6) evaluation and further action plans.

“The signing of MoU shows our commitment to protect, promote, and respect human rights in all aspects of life. Let us open this Festival into opportunities for positive changes towards a more inclusive society.” Says Atnike Nova Sigiro, the head of National Human Rights Commission in the opening speech prior to signing the collaborative document for the 2024 Human Rights Festival on Monday (25/3/2024).
Atnike stated in the National Human Rights Commission YouTube and Website that the 2024 Human Rights Festival is a critical momentum to increase awareness about the importance of human rights, to consolidate protection and increase solidarity in the fights for human rights. The Festival features a variety of activities to increase in-depth understanding of the importance of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity.

The head of the National Human Rights Commission, Atnike Nova Sigiro, and the executive director of INFID, Iwan Misthohizzaman signed the document. The acting deputy for Politics, Law, Defense, Security and Human Rights of the Presidential Staff Office, Professor Rumadi Ahmad, and the City Secretary in Bitung, Ignatius Rudy Theno co-signed as representative of the Presidential Staff Office and the City of Belitung.

The Education and Counselling Commissioner Putu Elvina, the Review and Research Commissioner Saurlin P. Siagian, the Complain Commissioner Hari Kurniawan, the Secretary General Henry Silka Innah and officials at National Human Rights Commission are present during the signing.
