"Kartini" film is good at influencing audience’s emotion, hence it is worth seeing by young people and parents. The film was made on the basis of research as the prime resource – from a book "Panggil Aku Kartini Saja" (or Call Me simply Kartini) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and a bunch of Kartini’s letters "Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang" (There is Light after Darkness), TEMPO magazine notes "Gelap Terang Hidup Kartini" (Kartini’s Life - Dark and Light.

The biopik film or the film that dramatises real life of Kartini looks at another side of Kartini that would not be in the history book. Kartini is portrayed as someone with a tomboy character, full of energy. There is also plenty of description about Kartini’s mother, Ngasirah, played well by Christine Hakim. Hanung Bramantyo presents Kartini story from a child’s eye who saw her mother being a cast in her own house.

Kartini film visually and thematically represents shift in patriarchy culture and women emancipation in Indonesia. The film depicts women’s life during Dutch colonial time. The film also depicts how Kartini’s sisters, Roekmini (played by Acha Septriasa) and Kardinah (played by Ayushita), helped Kartini build a school for poor people. Kartini also opened job opportunities for people in Jepara.

People call the struggle and movement of the three sisters "Daun Semanggi" or Clover Leaves ("Het Klaverblad" in Dutch). Her family called Kartini "Jaran Kore Ayu" or "Beautiful Wild Horse ".
The film shows that Kartini left values that today’s women would not find easy to achieve.

Controversy surrounding "Kartini" Film

Critic says that "Kartini" film (by Hanung Bramantyo) does not truly reflect historical interpretation and Javanese culture of the time of Kartini. Critic also says that the film fails to go deeper into the emotional aspects of Kartini. Compared to "RA Kartini" film by Sjumandjaja (1982), this "Kartini" film by Hanung pastinya is different in that it reflects today’s situation, played by top actress (Dian Sastrowardoyo) and top actor (Reza Rahardian). Other top actress and actor include Yenny Rahman, Adi Kurdi. "RA.Kartini" film presents somewhat sombre mood, yet at the same time portarys Kartini’s natural aspects as human and not heroic. (Ast)
