Gender-based violence increases annually. People should be alarmed and realise that safe spaces are not yet there. All parties including families, schools, communities and the State should take responsibility to create safe spaces , particularly for women, children and people with disability who are factually the most vulnerable groups when it comes to violence.
Safe spaces can only happen when safe culture is established. There are at least three aspects to creating safe spaces. First, we must ensure that every person is a safe person - meaning that each person should take responsibility for their own behaviour and actions to ensure safety of anyone or everyone; second, we must ensure that all places are safe places for anyone or everyone, free of bullying, discrimination, and violence; and third, we must ensure that each activity must guarantee physical and mental safety for everyone involved. People must fully understand what safe culture and how to create it, not just use the issue as jargon.
Within that background, Yayasan Yekti Angudi Piadeging Hukum Indonesia (YAPHI) collaborates with Fortunas (For a for Parents of Children with Disability) to conduct National Children’s Day 2025 celebration at the Hall of Laweyan Subdistrict on Saturday (26/7) themed “Building Safe Culture, Create Spaces without Violence”. YAPHI expects that the celebration does not stop with ceremonial activity, but goes further into a movement to encourage all parties to reflect and define collaborative steps to create safe spaces without violence.
A representative of Laweyan Subdistrict, Nungki Anggorowati says in her opening speech that the National Children’s Day is not just a celebration but also a reminder about our commitment to children’s rights. She appreciates children with disability for their efforts to make inclusion children with disability into reality, in collaboration with the subdistrict government of Laweyan. She hopes that the National Chldren’s Day forum will encourage real measures in the future to make the system better and to remind everyone that children are both blessings, and that Laweyan Subdistrict would be friendly space for kinds with disability, for inclusion, and inspiring others.
Education on Child Rights
In the event with more than 100 parents and children with disability, there is education regarding children’s rights and how to protect children with disability. The education also talks about ways to protect from bullying. In addition, there is a short video presentation about child protection. In discussion session, a number of questions come up regarding bullying and definition of children with disability as per Law No. 8 Year 2016 on Children with Disability. (Dorkas Febria/Ast)
