RSJD dr. Arif Zainudin provides first aid emergency training about psychiatric patients to all mental health cadres in Jebres Sub-district and the Indonesian Community for Schizophrenia Care (KPSI) Solo Raya on Friday (11/7). Most participants come from Jebres Sub-district where the hospital is located. The training opens with a testimony from a number of participants who notice that the hospital provides general as well as specialist services such as surgery, neurology, internal diseases, radiology, and clinical pathology laboratory.

“I take my child for an examination and therapy there for six months, and there are also home visits by the hospital staff, and the progress is good,” says a mother. “My child gets a therapy for growth and development and my child is doing well with no recurrent tantrum episodes. My child is now going to a regular school. The hospital provides a complete growth and development services. There is no long line.” says another mother.

As for the hospital, the general services run for three years now. Service facilities and building are being equipped. So it would be a pity if people do not make use of the hospital’s services, particularly those people living nearby such as people in Jebres. The first speaker, Dedy Ariwidiyanto, S.Kep.Ns. presents Crisis Management for People with Psychiatric Issues by using mechanical fixation.

He explains how to magae psychiatric patients –The patients’ clothes should not be taken off. Patients’ legs and hands should not be tied with a rope. Instead use cloth and specially-designed garment.

Then what about emergency patients? Touch the shoulders and the elbows. Do it for about five seconds for fixation (tie up). This is similar to making a knot and no longer use rattan rope but use cloth or sling. He then explains and shows how to do it.

With regards to shackles, he explains that such shackling cases is no longer happening in Solo. They are still happening in areas like Bojonegoro and Rembang. The “Indonesia Free of Shackle” Program should end in 2025, but it has not achieved its intended goal, so there is an extension until 2045.
Supardi from KPSI Solo Raya asks during a discussion session about suicides that happen lately that create trauma amongst survivors. He fears the stigma such as lack of faith, and asks how to provide motivation to survivors.

Hearing with Parliament Members during Training Break
Two members of parliament – Commission E in Central Java – are present in the training and offer their insights about mental health. A member from Semarang District, Bagus Suryokusumowho pursued university education at Universitas Negeri Semarang says that the provincial government own the RSJD dr. Arif Zainudin hospital. He suggest that people around the hospital can make the best use of the hospital. The only issue is that many people in Solo would refuse to be referred to the hospital for fear of stigma. He visited the hospital twice. He noticed that patients needed supports and he often had a conversation with psychiatrists and psychologists, who suggest that people with mental health issues often experience difficulties in life and therefore need supports. "We do not know whether we are mentally healthy or sick. There are people who suddenly become angry without any reason. Please take care of your own health. Once you have problems, please go to a psychologist or psychiatrist," he says.

Another parliament member, Ja'far Shodiq SH, S. Hum. Is finishing his Doctorate degree at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah and he visited the hospital a month ago. He criticises the phenomenon happening amongst the young generation, which he says is different from his generation. He also presents cases of violence against women and children, particularly in Islamic schools which are now viral. (Ast)
