The Parenting culture features pro-children rights education based on the four principles of child protection since 2024 – non-discrimination, children’s best interest, rights to life and children’s development to participate in discussion and in their voices being heard.

@Kulturparenting YouTube invites speaker Iwan Setiyoko from Yayasan Satu Karya Karsa (YSKK) – a Non-Goverment Organisation (NGO) active in women and children empowerment with focus on early and mid-level education. YSKK interacts with education networks at national level to keep itself up-to-date with development in education. While it is based in Solo, it has a national coverage.
The question for parents is what is their ‘mission’ to send children to school? We know that children go to public and private schools. Who then is responsible for meeting children’s education need? Are schools the ones to take the responsibility? Or does the responsibility rest with the parents?

The next question is education fulfils parents’ expectation. This is important for all people to contemplate, particularly for parents who need to think hard whether education and education infrastructure can meet parents’ expectation and the needs of children in the future.

Iwan says that during the National Education Day celebration, education activists and parents are reflecting, when the number of education dropouts increase – around three millions. The question is how will the State fulfils its obligation to guarantee the rights to education which constitutes children’s basic rights.

The number of even worse for children with disability – where only 12% of a total of two million children (or around 200 thousand) attend schools. Nationally, inclusion is already in place. In Surakarta for example, there are children with disability who do not go to inclusive school. So the question then is what about schools in other areas? Iwan suggests that this is something that everyone needs to take actions together.

Who then is required to attend the free 12-year education as many students drop out of school, usually by senior high school when parents are unable to pay the costs. It happens in private schools too. In essence, the State should be responsible for the costs of basic education. Today, what the State does is to subsidize, and not to pay the whole costs of basic education.
Nationally, national education integrity is low. How is this possible? The reason is corruptive behavior in education – bribery, nepotism, and collusion. This is what is happening right now with acceptance of new school.

From the point of view of rights to protection against violence, the State is not yet able to provide a guarantee that schools can become a safe education venue for children to develop and to grow. The number of violence is high by April 2024 – 106 cases.

The question is whether acceptance of new students is better this year than in 2024? The problem persist despite the availability of national complaint centre in the last seven years – zoning and discrimination. Zoning is meant for equality in education. Acceptance of New Students will not be a major issue if schools have the same quality of teachers, heads of schools and infrastructures. It also entails honesty and integrity as key components. (Ast)
