History
Yayasan Yekti Angudi Piadeging Hukum Indonesia (Yayasan YAPHI) aspires to a civilized society, characterized by its diverse but unified Indonesia, in a sustainable manner and in peaceful co-existence, on the basis of humanity, truth, justice, love and critical perspective. Yayasan YAPHI adheres to the same spirit and mandate as Yayasan Pengabdian Hukum Indonesia (YAPHI) which was established in 1987 by Yayasan Bimbingan Kesejahteraan Sosial (YBKS) Surakarta and Yayasan Ignatius Slamet Riyadi (YISR) Surakarta.
Yayasan YAPHI works with communities to promote civil, political, cultural and economic rights, and equality before the law. It address injustices and violence in communities (human rights, law, democracy, gender, child protection and environment), guided by truth, justice and fellowship. Truth means integrity – consistency between inner belief and actions. In social interaction, integrity deals with the common grounds struck between those who have power and those who are marginalized. In practice, truth signifies that parties who endorse mutually agreed “consensus” practice what they have agreed to do. Justice is about relations. Hence, enforcing justice means re-establishing relations to bring back people’s rights that were “barred”. Do people enjoy their rights, and do they perform their duties? Injustices occur when access to rights are barred while duties are enforced. Justice indicates a balance between fulfilment of rights and performance of duties. Fellowship corresponds to mutual respect without discrimination – whether race and ethnicity, religion, political choices and others.
Yayasan YAPHI is an independent, not-for-profit organisation advocating for human rights. It seeks to encourage changes in human behavior from nepotism, collusion and corruption to democracy, participation, and accountability. It promotes changes in legal system characterized by injustices to a just legal system in terms of legal policies and cultures; changes from an exclusive, patronage, feudal, apathetic and low participation in law enforcement into inclusive-pluralistic, critical, democratic, and participatory system.
